UUM Campus Still Open, Says Deputy Vice Chancellor
SINTOK, July 27(Bernama) -- The management and daily activities of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) will go on as usual despite the postponement of lectures for a week, which began yesterday due to a flu outbreak, said UUM deputy Vice Chancellor (Alumni and Student Affairs) Datuk Dr Ahmad Faiz Abdul Hamid.
However, he said the flu was not caused by the A(H1N1) virus.
"All activities which involve a large gathering of people including lectures have to be postponed as a precautionary measure to avoid flu infections," he told Bernama here Monday.
He said although the residential colleges in the university were not closed, the students were allowed to go home but there were some who stayed behind to finish their assignments.
In TERENGGANU, the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak continued to spread in the state with Institut Perguruan Sultan Mizan (IPSM) in Besut ordered to close for one week from today after seven cases of the disease were detected at it yesterday.
State executive councillor in charge of health, Dr Abdul Rahman Mokhtar said the seven people involved were given outpatient treatment and their blood samples sent for analysis.
Before this latest case of an educational institution asked to close down because of H1N1, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sultan Sulaiman 1 in Kuala Terengganu, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun, Politeknik Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Dungun and the Perkaya Foundation hostel in Marang experienced the same fate.
In KANGAR, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) put in place various countermeasures after four of its male students were suspected to have come down with Influenza A (H1N1.
However, its vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kamarudin Hussin said there was no necessity for the campus to be closed as the situation was under control.
